Ryou made Shizuka cry, and he knows it. The selfish streak that let him pin her on night one looks uglier when it is aimed at a girl who finally trusted him. He decides the kindest thing he can do is leave. If he is the problem, he will remove himself.

Shizuka does not let him finish that exit. She has spent eleven episodes being pulled, startled, jealous, and unsure. This is the first time she puts her whole feeling in front of him on purpose. She tells him she loves him — not as a reaction to a kiss, not as heat in a hotel, but as a choice to stop him from disappearing.

The last episode is short, like the rest of the series, and it spends that time on the sentence both of them have been dancing around. Ryou’s love came out early and greedy. Shizuka’s comes out late and scared and still real. The beast under the skirt does not win by chasing. He wins because the girl who once could not stand men runs after this one and says the words before he is gone.
