Eager for a private escape, Asako and the stoic Army Captain Shintaro travel to Atami for their honeymoon, basking in the seaside town's relaxing atmosphere and growing intimacy. Their tranquility is briefly interrupted when Shintaro's peer, Sasaki, coincidentally appears and insists on his attendance at a formal banquet with high-ranking military officials.
Though reluctant, Asako suppresses her feelings, smiling dutifully as a proper wife and sending him off with grace. Hours later, when Shintaro returns to their inn, Asako detects the unmistakable scent of women's powder (oshiroi) clinging to his uniform—evidence of the geisha or hostesses likely present at such gatherings.
