The time is the end of the Heian period. Shaga, a monstrous bird creature residing in Mount Kurama, finds herself tasked with protecting the young boy, Ushiwakamaru, whom she whimsically saved. As they journey towards the land of Oshu, Hiraizumi, fending off assassins sent by the Taira clan, Shaga discovers a new aspect of herself.
